Have you or someone close to you got diagnosed with cancer recently?

Did you get call from doctor’s office stating that the biopsy tests have come out to be positive?

The whole world seems to be tearing apart in front of your eyes. Isn’t it?

I wish I could say no, but yes, this is the first reaction when we hear the word “CANCER”.

It is indeed a dreadful word. The very thought of it creates fear and uncertainty. Negative emotions take over and it seems impossible to overcome them.

SO HOW TO COPE WITH THE DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER?

1. ACCEPTANCE:

Don’t stop or restrict your emotions. Try to accept the fact that you have got this. It might be too overwhelming and take time to realise it completely. Denial, dissociation, unacceptance are some of the ways in which mind may try to guard itself from the truth, and that is a natural tendancy of human brain.

Take your time, as much as you want. Coming to terms with it may be impossible initially, so it is very important that you realize the reality. Because that is the very first step to take further actions.

2. SEEK HELP/ ASK FOR SUPPORT

It may be too overwhelming for you to come to terms with the diagnosis. So it is very important to realise when you need help, and never shy away from seeking it.

Discuss it with your family members and close friends, express your emotions, and don’t keep it inside. It will definitely relieve your stress and anxiety.

3. GAIN KNOWLEDGE

The next step is gaining as much knowledge about your disease as you can. Discuss with your doctor, and ask as many questions as possible.

Except from this, you should ask your oncologist any doubt that you have, and also for some genuine educational resources which you could refer to, to gain more knowledge about your disease. Coming with terms with your cancer, it’s stage, it’s prognosis, various treatment options available, and expected benefits and side effects with each of them is very important to take a better treatment decision.

4. MAINTAIN A NORMAL AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Continue living the life as you were living before the diagnosis, unless the disease itself or the treatment poses some limitations or restrictions. In fact, try introducing healthy diet and lifestyle options in your daily life. Exercise in any form may be beneficial in terms of improving your resilience against the disease and treatment related side effects.

5. SOCIAL SUPPORT

Apart from the support of your friends and family, start looking for support groups in your local community. Also, consider becoming a part of some online support group. It will help you connect with people who are going through a similar phase of life. You can learn from their experiences and their journey, and share yours too. Discussing your concerns with them may alleviate your anxiety further, and may give you huge psychological support.

6. START LIVING YOUR PASSION

If there is something you always wanted to do in your life, some hidden passion that you have been procrastinating, now is the time. Consider this as your “wake up call” to start working towards your passion, obviously within your physical limitations.

In short, just focus on what you can control, and not what you can’t. Following the above steps may not play a role in determining whether you will beat cancer or not. But yes, they will make you feel more in control and better equipped to face it more effectively, and go a long way in improving your quality of life.
