My regular scans and bloodwork have all been coming back normal and I hope it stays that way!
Hi guys! My name is Kristen and I’m finally (fingers crossed!) on my way to recovery after a long, eventful fight. I first started showing symptoms in the summer of 2015 when I was 20. I developed sudden onset chest pain which turned out to be a pulmonary embolism. My doctors didn’t know where they came from. I had no DVT, and wasn’t generally considered “at risk” given my age, my active job, and not being a smoker. Periodically I would run out of pain medication and end up back in the ER. One of these times, my heart was racing more than is normal for just being in pain. I was skittish and anxious and felt like I was dying. Sure enough, I could have been. I was in full thyroid storm. In the months between when my PE problems started and this point (January 2016) my thyroid had blown up to look like there was a tennis ball in my throat. Shortly after, I had my first biopsy. I never heard the results of that biopsy until six months later, when my family doctor back home (I was away at college for this whole debacle) fought to have the results released to him- with my consent of course. My first biopsy results came back as being “abnormal cells of unknown significance” which had previously been reported to me as “normal”. My family doctor referred me for a second biopsy, which came back positive for follicular neoplasm. The doctor I was referred to for my biopsy also performed my total thyroidectomy operation in the fall of 2016. My recovery went about as well as could be expected. The worst part about it for me was the surgical drains. A few weeks after my operation, pathology reports came back positive for follicular thyroid carcinoma and papillary microcarcinomas. In the spring of 2017, I had radioactive i131 treatment. Since then, I am recovering well and am well regulated on synthroid. My regular scans and bloodwork have all been coming back normal and I hope it stays that way!
