Lost my mom to cervical cancer. Now I am working with American Cancer Society to spread awareness
My name is Ashley and I lost my mom to Cervical Cancer in June of 2015 after she fought nearly 4 years. Since she has passed, I have fought hard to raise awareness to Cervical Cancer because it is a top killer of women and most people aren’t aware of that. It has become a tradition, this year being my 6th time, for me to color my hair teal in October to not only show support for my mom, but to raise awareness. I run in races, trying to do more and more, to show my support of Cervical Cancer Awareness and in memory of my mom. For the 2019 Relay For Life, I am a co-event lead while also the captain of my team, In Memory Of Kristy Shumate. This year, I wanted to do something big that hasn’t been done before so that I can raise double what I did in 2018! My big fundraiser this year is that for everybody that donates any amount will be put into a drawing. The winner from that drawing will have the choice to have me either 1. color my hair completely in the cancer color of their choosing or 2. shave my hair completely off! I take a lot of pride in my hair and also spend a lot of money taking care of it so shaving it off is a huge deal! But at the end of the day, it’s more than worth it because I know I’m raising money not only in memory of my mom who was taken way too soon, but all of those men, women and children that are fighting their battle and can use all of our support we can give. I’m proud to be working with the American Cancer Society!!!
